Hillard “Sweet Pea” Atkinson, the fedora-carrying vocalist for Was (Not Was), has died at the age of 74.

The singer was identified for hits like Walk The Dinosaur and Spy In The Dwelling Of Really like, and also executed with Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and Iggy Pop.

He experienced the voice I always wished I experienced,” Don Was advised Billboard journal. “When I was crafting songs, I was constantly crafting with him in intellect.”

The singer died of a coronary heart attack in Los Angeles, where he lived, on 5 May.

Born in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1945, Atkinson moved to Detroit when he was youthful and worked on the assembly line for Chrysler cars and trucks.

At night, he sang with fellow United Automobile Workers users in a nearby band identified as Hello Power, and started scoring studio classes as a backing vocalist.

He acquired the title “Sweet Pea” because “he was a sweet gentleman who really cared about men and women,” said his good friend, the producer and author Chris Tian.

Soon immediately after showing on Grace Jones’s 1979 LP My Quite Specific Guests, Atkinson bumped into David Weiss (David Was) and Don Fagenson (Don Was) at Detroit’s Audio Suite Studios.

“He was the most flamboyant character I at any time met,” Was reported. “It was a few in the morning and we walked out into the hallway and he is sporting this orange ensemble – hat, shirt, socks and footwear all matched the specific exact shade of orange.

“Coming out of that dim handle place, it appeared like he was on hearth.”

Soon after listening to him sing, the musicians recruited him to their surrealist art-rock project Was (Not Was), the place his gruff, soulful vocals generally introduced gravitas to their a lot more outlandish musical excursions.

On the band’s self-titled debut album, he sang the stand-out ballad Exactly where Did Your Coronary heart Go, and a calendar year later on the group backed him on his solo album Never Walk Away.

Wander The Dinosaur, a song as joyfully cartoonish as its title suggests, gave Was (Not Was) a worldwide hit in 1987. Atkinson shared lead vocals on the track with Harry Bowens, but took centre-phase for the subsequent Major 20 smash Spy In The House Of Appreciate.

“He was 1 of a form,” Was (Not Was) guitarist Randy Jacobs informed Billboard.

“He was one particular of people fellas who opens his mouth and it truly is just there. He didn’t have to warm up to do that. All the time I knew him, he failed to have to warm up singing. He just opened his mouth, and there it was. It was a gift.”

Following 1987, Don Was observed himself ever more in need as a producer, and Was (Not Was) disbanded just after 1990’s Are You Okay? album – on which Atkinson and Bowens shipped an up-to-date get on The Temptations’ Papa Was A Rolling Stone, manufacturing an additional Uk Leading 10.

More than the upcoming handful of a long time, Atkinson sang with The Boneshakers, and appeared on albums by Elton John, Brian Wilson, Willie Nelson, Paula Abdul, Michael McDonald and Solomon Burke. He also put in a 10 years on the highway with nation singer Lyle Lovett, who had nothing but praise for his talent.

“Just how pure he was and how soulful he was arrived by means of in anything he did,” said the star.

Atkinson’s most recent release was the solo album, Get What You Ought to have, in 2017, which observed him go over soul classics by the likes of James Brown and Bobby Womack.

“But he’s not a mimic,” wrote the Wall Street Journal’s Jim Fusilli in his evaluation. “It is really his gravel-edged voice and his potential to wring the emotion out of a lyric that put him in their stellar company.”

Atkinson is survived by a few adult children, grandchildren, and a sister in Detroit.
